POST-DOCTORAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM

As part of the UK-Medicon Valley Bioscience Alliance's goal of increasing interactions between the UK and Medicon Valley as well as between academics and life science companies in the two regions, the Alliance will be establishing a postdoctoral program linked to the various research workshops being organized.

The programme will involve an exchange of up to 16 post-doctoral scientists between the two regions, offering unique, high-profile research opportunities to exciting young scientists, as well as to the academic groups and companies involved. Postdoctoral fellowships will be offered for research projects in 4 areas of common interest:

Diabetes and Obesity
Oncology
CNS
Regenerative Medicine

Objectives
The goal of the programme is to establish a joint effort to increase research capacity and research training in areas where both the UK and Medicon Valley have a high priority research interest. The broad goals for the establishment of the fellowships include:

stimulating incremental R&D research activity between the UK and Medicon Valley
encouraging and facilitating university-industry collaborations in health research
developing and training new scientists to meet the human resource needs of academia, industry, and clinical communities
stimulating jobs and growth in the UK and Medicon Valley
enhancing communications between management in industry and universities
stimulating the health research programs of start-ups, university spin-offs and SMEs in both regions

Duration of the Fellowship
The UK-MV Fellowships will provide support for one to two years.

The first postdoctoral program will initially comprise 4 fellowships in the area of diabetes research and will start in the Autumn of 2007.
